BEIT LAHIYA, Gaza Strip — It's harvest time on the sandy hillsides of the northern Gaza Strip , but about the only one picking strawberries on a recent afternoon was 2-year-old Ala Abu Halima, who quietly smushed berry after berry into his mouth. The strawberries going into the boy's mouth should have been on their way to upscale markets across Europe . Instead, what was expected to be the largest strawberry harvest in Gaza Strip history may turn out to be one of the worst. "It's making me crazy," said Ahmed Abu Halima , Ala's father and a farmer. "Every day I come and go, but there's nothing to do." On the eve of the Bush administration's Middle East conference in Annapolis, Md ., which is scheduled to begin Tuesday with diplomats from as many as 40 countries attending, the Gaza...

The punch line of a cruel joke: Carpentries in Gaza are allowed to sell furniture in Israel and the West Bank, but are forbidden from buying the wood to build it with This is how it works: Israel limits the entry of civilian goods into the Gaza Strip. In 2012, Gisha compelled the state to reveal the formulae it used to calculate how much and what kind of food it allowed Gaza residents to receive until 2010, when its policy on entrance of goods to Gaza was exceedingly restrictive. After the Marmara flotilla incident in 2010, the policy changed. Everything was allowed in, except for a list of items that require special permits. These are defined as “dual-use” items, as, allegedly, there is concern that they can be used for military purposes. The dual-use item list impacts all areas of life...
Gaza's Ark is an international project to focus the world's attention on the continuing Israeli restrictions that prevent the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip from importing and exporting freely -- and thus building a viable economy. We will build a boat in Gaza using existing resources. A crew of internationals and Palestinians will sail it out of Gaza, the only Mediterranean port closed to shipping, carrying Palestinian products to fulfill trade deals with international buyers, to challenge the illegal and inhuman Israeli blockade. If Israel acts as it has in the past to prevent the "Ark" from sailing, the effort itself will have shone a bright light on the talents within Gaza, and the people's ability to free themselves of aid dependence if just given the chance. Although it will help ...

It's almost impossible for people in the Palestinian territory of Gaza to get hold of many of the items which are essential for daily life. That's because of the blockade maintained by Israel and Egypt. Gazans are having to improvise to maintain basic living conditions. And Paula Slier has been hearing more of their stories.
